Coral reefs are an important source of nutrition and income for coastal communities around the world. A square kilometer of healthy coral reef can provide 5 to 10 tons of fish per year. Many fishing communities all around the world rely on this steady supply of fish for their main source of income. Coral reef fisheries provide an average of 1.57 million tons of seafood every year to more than six million people around the world. Photo credit: NOAA
