Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) is a deadly coral disease that was first reported in 2014 off the coast of Florida. Since then it has spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean. The disease affects over 20 hard coral species and is now found on reefs in over 30 countries and territories. The large geographic scale of this outbreak, rapid onset, and often fatal nature of the disease, as well as the susceptibility of many coral species to it, make SCTLD unprecedented in its ecological impact, and likely one of the most deadly coral disease outbreaks in history.
