IOOS is a federal, regional, and private-sector partnership working to enhance our ability to collect, deliver, and use ocean information.
More than 20 years ago, NOAA became involved in efforts to develop a U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®) to track, predict, manage, and adapt to changes in the coastal, marine, and Great Lakes environments. Formally established in 2007, IOOS helps improve safety, enhance the economy, and protect the environment by delivering data and information that increases scientific understanding and enables decision makers to take appropriate action.
In fiscal year 2013, NOAA awarded $27.2 million to sustain critical ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes observing efforts and support innovative marine sensor technologies. Funding for the awards, provided through IOOS, other federal agencies, and NOAA programs, will "sustain those observations and speed the transition of promising new technologies into the ocean, where they can serve our coastal communities day in and day out," says IOOS Director Zdenka Willis.
The awards will provide $2.9 million for marine sensor innovation projects and $24.3 million to sustain ongoing projects.
Among the highlights of the awards are $1 million to the Southeastern Universities Research Association to make operational the U.S. IOOS Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed, an infrastructure for the testing and improvement of both non-federal and federal models and prediction tools; and $0.5 million, jointly funded by U.S. IOOS and NASA, to improve satellite sea surface temperature data from existing and new sensors, produce a blended output of the data from U.S. and international datasets, and provide products for coastal applications and regional IOOS usage.
