National Ocean Month

5 June 2020

June 8 is World Ocean Day — part of our annual recognition of National Ocean Month. This week also kicked off the eighth year of NOS’s “30 Days of the Ocean” online outreach campaign. NOS will be sharing videos, imagery, and facts about our ocean and coasts throughout the month, with each week focusing on a special theme: June 1-6 (Ocean Health); June 7-13 (Ocean Trivia); June 14-20 (Ocean Life); and June 21-30 (Ocean Science). This online effort affords us the opportunity to share the importance of our world ocean, increase awareness of online NOS products and services, and promote ocean and environmental literacy to support informed stewardship decisions. Be sure to visit our National Ocean Month website page. And if you haven’t already, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Look for #30DaysofOcean and #OceanMonth2020.

Since the last World Ocean Day, we’ve accomplished a great deal here at NOS. One major milestone I’d like to highlight is our participation in the 2019 White House Summit on Partnerships in Ocean Science & Technology. This event focused on strengthening partnerships in ocean science and technology to address societal needs such as exploring the ocean, conserving marine biodiversity, and leveraging big data.

Shortly after the Summit, the White House issued a Presidential Memorandum titled Ocean Mapping of the United States Exclusive Economic Zone and the Shoreline and Nearshore of Alaska. NOS is playing and will continue to play a key role in realizing the goals outlined in the memorandum, which include advancing marine science, promoting new technologies, and mapping and exploring the unknown ocean.

Steady as we go,
