NOAA Coastal Management Fellowship

Matching state coastal management programs with future coastal managers.

What is the Coastal Management Fellowship Program? Zoë Johnson, a graduate of the program, talks about her experience as a fellow and how it impacted her career. Today, Zoë is the climate change coordinator for NOAA's Chesapeake Bay office.

The Coastal Management Fellowship matches students interested in coastal management careers with state programs that need their talents and skills, increasing the pool of qualified and trained future coastal zone managers in the process. Fellows work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, NOAA's Office for Coastal Management.

Fellows gain the skills, contacts, and confidence needed to transition successfully from academia to work (the majority in state programs). Current state coastal resource managers gain additional resources, creative ideas, and the most current technical knowledge to run their programs effectively. As a result of the fellowship, a variety of technical and policy projects are completed at the state level that might not have been undertaken without the help of a fellow.
