About the NOS Education Program

NOAA Ocean Service (NOS) Education engages formal and informal education audiences to build environmental literacy through products and programs that incorporate the applied science of NOS. We support teacher infusion of NOS content into local curricula through face to face and virtual professional development opportunities.

Online Education Products

NOS Education creates innovative products that enlighten students and educators about the breadth of scientific research, technology, and activities conducted by NOS related to our ocean, our coasts, and the climate. These include education lesson plans, resources, student tutorials, and more, for audiences of all ages. Our lesson plans and resources emphasize hands-on activities and problem-based learning as well as resources for increasing ocean and climate literacy, and infusing them into teaching settings across grade bands. These are correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

NOAA Planet Stewards

NOAA Planet Stewards is an NOS Education keystone program. It provides educators working with elementary through college-aged students access to opportunities and resources enabling them to build up scientifically literate individuals and communities. NOAA Planet Stewards also supports educators’ in implementing hands-on projects that conserve, restore, and protect human communities and natural resources from environmental impacts.

Professional Development

Through our website, programs, and e-newsletter: The Watch, educators can access a wide range of professional development opportunities and resources. These include live and archived webinars, monthly book club discussions, and workshops at locations across the country.

Evaluation of Education Resources

NOS Education engages in ongoing evaluation to determine how ocean, coastal, and climate science resources can be accessed and used effectively by educators to help them meet national teaching standards while fostering student environmental literacy.

Partnerships and Collaborative Projects

NOS Education works to build partnerships with education partners and federal agencies that enhance classroom-based science, technology, and engineering education. Some of our current partnerships include the National Science Teaching Association and National Earth Science Teachers Association.
