Another alien invader that is of concern today in North America is the Northern
snakehead (Channa argus), an aggressive predator that
feeds opportunistically on amphibians, fish, aquatic birds,
and small mammals. Of greater concern is the snakehead fish's ability to survive
in waters with low dissolved oxygen and to travel across land. Reproducing populations
of snakeheads have now been discovered in Maryland, California, and Florida.
Individual fish have also been caught in Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and
Hawaii. (Photo credit: U.S. Geological Survey, Florida Integrated Science Center) |
