Marine Transportation, Maritime Safety, Charting and Navigation
This constituent roundtable was the first in a series of Ocean Future Roundtables to be hosted by Dr. Richard Spinrad, Assistant Administrator, NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS). This roundtable focused on NOAA's present and future support to the Nation's Marine Transportation System with particular emphasis on products and servies which ensure safety of navigation. Several topics were discussed during this dialogue including the status of PORTS, tide and current modeling and forecast support for the mariner, and developments in the nautical charting program. These and related topics were chosen to give participants a sense of NOS's commitment to maritime safety and its vision of the future.

NOS Coordinating Offices
Three NOS program offices have coordinated this first roundtable:
The Office of Coast Survey collects, manages and compiles the data and information necessary to maintain the national suite of 1,000 nautical charts, hydrographic surveys that measure water depth, and historic maps and charts. Information on the Coast Survey program can be found at the Surveys Web site -- nauticalcharts.noaa.gov
The National Geodetic Survey develops and maintains a national system of positioning data needed for transportation, navigation, and communication systems; land record systems; mapping and charting efforts; and defense operations. The Survey also implements a coastal mapping program, which measures precise positions of the shoreline and other features needed for creating accurate nautical charts. Information of the Geodetic Surveys program can be found at the Surveys Web site -- geodesy.noaa.gov
The Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) provides water level and coastal current oceanographic products, measures and predicts tides throughout the nation, and is responsible for disseminating this information to the public. CO-OPS also manages the Physical Oceanographic Real-Time Systems (PORTS®) that reside in 10 major U.S. harbors. Information of the Centers program can be found at the Centers Web site -- tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov
