About National Ocean Service
Promoting Ocean Awareness and a Stewardship Ethic
Roundtable Program | Attendees | NOS Coordinating Offices
promoting ocean awareness and a stewardship ethic

Education is an essential part of ocean stewardship. It is not enough to govern our oceans in isolation; stewardship implies that we are striving to achieve a sustainable future for the ocean realm. We must communicate the importance of responsible ocean governance to those who will be doing the governing long into the future. This Roundtable focused on opportunities for improving and increasing ocean literacy and stewardship, formal and informal marine science education for grades K-12, and NOS outreach activities. NOS is looking for new partnerships with governments, nongovernmental organizations, the private sector, and academia to improve ocean awareness and stewardship.

NOS Coordinating Office

One NOS program office is coordinating the sixth roundtable:

The National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP) protects and manages 13 sanctuaries encompassing over 18,000 square miles of U.S. ocean. Important habitats like breeding and feeding grounds of whales, sea lions, sharks and sea turtles; coral reefs; kelp forests; and historic shipwrecks are represented within the system of sanctuaries. Each sanctuary maintains an on-site field staff that conducts research and monitoring, resource protection, and educational activities. Information on the NMSP program can be found at the program’s Web site -- sanctuaries.noaa.gov
