This photo was taken from video footage recorded in August 2002 at a depth of about 240 ft over the Outer Shelf Reefs off Cape Fear, North Carolina. The Outer Shelf Reefs are oases for many marine species in an otherwise barren landscape of open ocean. This sighting was noteworthy because lionfish are not known to go this deep in their native habitat. Note that the date, time, depth, water temperature and salinity are displayed in the upper portion of the photo. (Photo credit: NOAA)
