This photo was taken from video footage recorded in August 2002 at a depth of
about 240 ft over the Outer Shelf Reefs off Cape Fear, North
Carolina. The Outer Shelf Reefs are oases for many marine species in an otherwise
barren landscape of open ocean. This sighting was noteworthy because lionfish
are not known to go this deep in their native habitat. Note that the date, time,
depth, water temperature and salinity are displayed in the upper portion of the
