Case Study: A Reef of Your Own
New tools used by Teacher A in this lesson were cooperative learning and peer evaluation. Each student group focused on different aspects of a coral reef model. When each group presented their results to the class their peers evaluated their work. The class compiled the highlights from each group to create an ideal coral reef model. Once the lesson was completed, it was evident that students had a firm understanding of coral reef ecosystems. All students were able to fully explain the role of the zooxanthellae in a coral reef, coral reef reproduction, coral nutritional requirements, and coral conservation efforts. NOAA's National Ocean Service Corals Tutorial and online resources were instrumental in aiding students in their research and provided a wealth of information on corals.
